The approach to the Varel city harbour is from Wilhelmshaven via the buoyed Varel fairway up to buoy V 18. From here one follows the Varel low (1.5.-1.10.) which is pronounced on the port side.)
The Prickenweg up to the lock has a water depth of 2m at half tide in shallow places.
 Operating times of the Sperrwerk lock:
The lock is a sieve lock and can only be opened when the external and internal water are equal. General lock operations take place between the months of April through October between the hours of 06:00 and 22:00 when high water is present during this time. Weekend locks must be announced by Thursday, 13.00.
Lock times (lock opening usually approx. 30 - 45 minutes) are:
 - at high tide (rising water) approx. 2 ½ hours before high tide,
 - at low tide (draining water) approx. 1 hour after high tide.
