NV Cruising Guide
Navigation
The harbour can be approached with 3 m draught. The approach is in the leading light of the harbour (2 F.R) with 155°. If in strong onshore westerly winds entry and exit is not possible, the fires will be extinguished.
The loading bridge of the quarry 0.2sm southwest of the port is closed.
Berths
Guest boats are moored alongside the quay in the central harbour basin or in front of stern buoys with sterns to the eastern quay at 3.1m water depth. In high summer, the small harbour with 25 berths is very often overcrowded.
Surroundings
Besides a kiosk, a café and a restaurant, there are no utilities here. Sanitary facilities and fresh water are however available. Due to the location of the harbour on the steep coast, the use of a VHF transmitter is usually not possible.
NV Land Guide
The cozy fishing village consists of a cluster of houses "stuck" on a steep slope. Its beautiful location is reminiscent of Mediterranean villages. Directly at the harbour, a monument is dedicated to the former stonecutters of Vang. It consists of massive ashlars, which were obviously not picked up by the stonecutters' customers. It took a stonecutter several days, sometimes even weeks, to complete such a ashlar.
If, in the last stage of work, a corner snapped off through a careless blow, all the work was in vain.
At the pier, a few hundred yards south of the village, granite is loaded from the nearby quarries. The quarries and granite works are not a sight to behold in the otherwise naturally beautiful area.
Worth seeing is the small watermill at the mouth of Ringedalen. It lies about 1000 metres south of the harbour. Renovated from the ground up, it is once again operational. In spite of the mill dam, it used to happen that the mill wheel did not turn in dry summers due to a shortage of water. Then a heavy rain shower had to be waited for. The mill dam further inland has also been renovated and fitted with a new weir. A kilometre south of the mill, a striking cliff juts out of the beach. It has been given the name Krogeturen (Kroge = crow). If you continue along the shore path in the direction you have taken, you will come to Jons Chapel (see Teglkås). In the opposite direction, the narrow coastal path leading north takes you to the ruins of Hammerhus (see Hammerhavnen). The distance is four kilometres.
In addition to a harbour kiosk and Sølyst pastry shop, the tranquil village has a hillside restaurant with a coffee garden. The garden is perfect for enjoying the view in the evening sun and imagining what life was like here over 100 years ago, when the harbour was so full of sailing ships that you could cross it on dry feet.
The restaurant is located on the hillside.
