NV Land Guide
The small town itself does not have many sights to offer, but is located in scenic surroundings. The church of Brejning with its dodecagonal ground plan is one of the most idiosyncratic church buildings. The buildings between the harbour and the town are no less idiosyncratic. The park-like area with its scattered buildings used to be the largest psychiatric institution in Denmark. However, this superlative no longer applies today. Instead of centralising, as was the case in the past, the facilities for the mentally ill are now being distributed throughout Denmark.
The worthwhile destinations are more likely to be found in the vicinity of the town, with good supply facilities provided by grocery stores, banks and specialist shops. A trip by bus to Jelling via Vejle is recommended, as it was the seat of Danish kings 1000 years ago.
The two mighty burial mounds of Gorm the Old and his wife Thyra are a reminder of the time when the country was on its way from paganism to Christianity. In addition, King Gorm the Old had a famous rune stone erected here, and his son Harald Blue-tooth later erected an even larger and more magnificent one for his father Gorm. These two runestones are considered the most outstanding written mementos of antiquity in the north.
Denmark's oldest lime paintings can be found in the small, whitewashed Romanesque church located between the two burial mounds.
The small museum directly opposite the church offers more information about the town's prehistory.
The county seat of Børkop, south of Brejning, still features a turn-of-the-century railway station. Again, immediately south of Børkop lies the listed Børkop watermill, which has already been a Danish stamp motif. It is believed that the mill wheels turned for the first time in 1546. Today, a restaurant is run within the old walls.
At Elbækpark in Børkop stands the Skålsten, a side stone of a grave in which bones and a bronze ring were found. With its bowl-shaped depressions, it is a reminder of the sun worship and fire sacrifices of Danish ancestors.
The area around Brejning is one of the most varied natural areas in southern Jutland. The traces of the last ice age are particularly evident here. In the northwest of Brejning, beautiful protected forests stretch out. In the southeast of the town are the large summer house areas and bathing beaches.
